The coast around Portocolom with its rocky areas, small coastal caves and crystal clear waters is very popular for snorkeling and offers a variety for water sports and boat trips. It is said to be a diver’s paradise with many offers. Hikes around the bay in its originality inspire nature lovers and explorers. Worth seeing is the lighthouse at the top, called “Far de Sa Punta de Ses Crestes”, with breathtaking views of the bay and the sea.

Portocolom and its history

The name originally supposedly comes from the navigator and adventurer Christopher Columbus. Mann said that on his way to America he stopped in Portocolom to prepare for the long journey.

Some Mallorcans even think that Christopher Columbus was born here and that is where the place got its name, although this is not historically proven.

The most probable true theory, however, is that the Romans used to give the name of “Portu Columbi”, which means seagull harbor, because of the many seagulls that were present here.
