Historical background
The origins of Valldemossa date back to the 14th century, when King Jaume II had a palace built for his asthmatic son Sancho. This monastery was inhabited by Carthusian monks for centuries and today forms the cultural center of the town.
The Valldemossa Charterhouse
The Valldemossa Charterhouse is undoubtedly the village’s main attraction. Originally built as a royal palace, it was later converted into a monastery. The complex includes a neoclassical church, a historic cloister, the old monastery pharmacy and the monks’ cells. Of particular note are cells no. 2 and no. 4, where the famous composer Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand spent the winter of 1838/39. Today, personal belongings of the two artists are on display in these rooms, including Chopin’s Pleyel piano.
Santa Catalina Thomás – The saint of Mallorca
Valldemossa is also the birthplace of Mallorca’s only saint, Santa Catalina Thomás. She was born in 1531 in a modest house in Calle Rectoria, which today serves as a place of pilgrimage. Tiles and altars in her honor can be found throughout the village, commemorating her pious life.
Architecture and townscape
The village lies at an altitude of 436 meters above sea level and is laid out in terraces. Most of the buildings date back to the 16th and 17th centuries and are decorated with colorful tiles and flowering oleander plants. The car-free, winding alleyways invite you to take a leisurely stroll and offer numerous photo opportunities.
Culinary specialties
A visit to Valldemossa would not be complete without tasting the local specialty, coca de patata. This soft potato pastry is traditionally served with a cup of hot chocolate or an almond drink and is available in local bakeries.
